The Dr. Robert White Regatta, Schuylkill River,
Philadelphia, May 1, 2011.

A 1500-meter race course; competition limited to freshman and novice boats.

Conditions: Partly sunny. Strong currents—with the rowers in the morning heats; against them in the afternoon final races. Choppy water and headwinds.
DBP had three entries overall in this regatta. In order of races:

First up, the Boys Novice 4+ (McEachern at stroke, Getsos, Neville, Mistretta, Cleary at cox) had a solid run, finishing second in their heat with a time of 5:18.41, behind first place Monsignor Bonner, and beating out St. Joseph’s Prep, Moorestown, and Philadelphia City.

The final proved a nailbiter, as the 4+ got off to a poor start and passed the stands in 4th place in a field of five. Heart and sheer nerve (and great cox’ing) propelled them to a 2nd place finish, again behind Msgr. Bonner, with a final time of 5:31.37, 7.5 seconds out of first.

The Boys Novice 8+ (Pepe at stroke, Kwiatkowski, Dwyer, Dolce, DeVuono, Lombardi, Pellicano, Weir, Ventura at cox) were resolved to demonstrate their best and pulled a solid time of 5:42.67 in a competitive heat. It wasn’t enough to qualify for the final and they did not advance.

Finally, the Freshman 4x (Malley at stroke, Sadowski, Biby and McGann) finished first of three boats in their heat with a time of 5:04.37, qualifying for finals. Ultimately they came in first of five boats in the final, shaving a few milliseconds off their time with 5:04.13, beating Montclair, Haverford, Conestoga and Roman Catholic, and collecting a gold medal for the team and a trophy for the case.

Congratulations to the coaches and all of our
athletes for their teamwork, sportsmanship, and
excellent effort. You make us proud!
