The Tenth Annual Head of the Passaic took place on October 15th this year.The regatta is a ~2.5 mile head race on the Passaic River. For 2011 the course was slightly modified: the start is just half a mile downstream of Nereid Boat Club and the finish roughly 1.5 miles downstream from PRRA.  The course is challenging with two bridges, two docks, and tidal currents.

This year saw record participation: HOPR 2011 included 235 entries from 33 clubs with a total of 777 participants (150 more than last year). The most competitive events included the  Mens Youth 8+ and  Mens Youth 4+, both with 21 teams competing.

Don Bosco Crew entered a Novice 8+ and four JV/Varsity Fours+.

Results of the Men’s Youth Four+ are as follows:

Don Bosco A:   16:40.46   5th place

Cox: M Cleary;  Stroke D Cleary, D Palotta, C Neville; bow C Russo

Narrative: Good race for the conditions, including high winds and very choppy water; managed to maintain a good set. Passed St. Peter’s out of the gate; closed a significant gap with Viking (ultimate 2nd  place finisher) .

Right behind the DBP A boat was DBP  D, earning 6th place with a time of    16:50.11

Line up: M. McEachern at stroke, P. Festa, M. Dwyer and A. Wunsch at bow. Cox’ed by Cormac Malley, normally a sculler in his first outing at cox.

Today marked the lineup’s second outing together in a  brand new Resolute boat, named Commander 9775, and a switch to sweeping from  sculling in their previous race.

The conditions proved challenging but the rowers persevered and were gratified that  they passed 3 boats and caught up to a huge cluster of boats during the final stretch

The DBP B boat earned 10th place with a time of 17:35.53.   Lineup included T. Biby at stroke, M. Sadowski, P. Getsos, B. Mistretta and   D. Galimi at cox.

Finally, the DBP C boat , with M.Pepe at stroke earned  14th place with a time of   18:35.72.

DBP’s Novice 8+ had a very good first outing, competing against a diverse field which included high school teams from Greenwich, Kearney and St. Peter’s Prep, club teams such as Mt. Lakes and Port Rowing, and college novices from NYU.Lineup included :    Stroke  J. Perez, T Dwyer, J Mosca,  C Walker, J Schepis, T. Faenza, J Buda and M Muniz.

The Novice 8+ earned a 6th place finish out of 13 boats, with a time of 20:08.86.
