October 8, 2011 – Navy Day

October 8, 2011—

In 1986, the Navy Day Regatta was initiated as a way to promote and support Navy and Marine Corps awareness and to celebrate the founding of the US Navy. It is held annually in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River the second weekend in October. Initially a 700 meter race, the Navy Day Regatta was expanded over time to a 2.5 mile Head Race as a warmup for the Head of the Charles and Head of the Schuylkill races.

Don Bosco Prep entered three boats in this year’s Navy Day Regatta.

The first was the JV8+ which, under the direction of an experienced coxswain (D. Galimi), was racing together for the first time. Stroke D. Cleary was pulled at the last minute to sub into the Junior 4+, and in his place at stroke was T. Biby. (Lineup: Biby, M. Sadowski, P. Getsos, B. Mistretta, K. Schnaars, T. Kwiatkowski, M. Pepe, bow: S. Weir.) The JV8+ managed a challenging stroke rate and despite tough odds, finished a commendable 11th place, with a time of 15:48.12 in a field of 24 boats.

Next up was the Junior 4+, ably cox’ed by M. Cleary. Stroke S. Menken was injured and replaced by D. Cleary (lineup: Cleary, D. Pallotta, C. Neville, and bow: C. Russo). With just a day’s practice this new lineup managed a fourth-place finish, with a time of 15:13.65, in a field of 18.

Finally the Junior 4x (Stroke: M. McEachern, P. Festa, N. Lombardi, bow: A. Wunsch) put up an official time of 16:36.04, after assessment of a 30-second penalty for interference. The rowers believe that the penalty was unfairly assessed and that they had passed the conflict, as well as another boat. No foot steering presented another challenge. On only two days of practice, they earned a 13th-place finish in a field of 19 boats.
